Spring Day -BTS, 보고 싶다.

토요일 오후, 이리저리 인터넷 서핑을 하다 우연히 접한 잡지 기사 하나로 이어진 이 감정에 하루 종일 젖어있습니다. 많은 분들이 BTS를 좋아하실 겁니다. 그중 제가 가장 좋아하는 곡 중 하나가 Spring Day입니다. 

 

해외에 살면서 한국의 음악을 거의 접하지 않던 제게 다시금 K-pop이라는 문화에 눈을 뜬 계기가 바로 BTS 였지요.  지인들은 지금의 제 나이에 10대도 아니고 무슨 K-Pop 이냐고 핀잔을 주었지만, 제가 보는 BTS는 아티스트였습니다. 또한 해외에 살며 자신 있게 한국인이라 말할 수 있던 자긍심을 주었던 계기도 되었지요.

오래전 Esquire 메거진에서 BTS를 커버스토리로 다루었던 기사를 본 적이 있습니다. BTS의 "봄날(Spring Day)"를 주제도 이어졌던 글이었습니다. 그 메거진에서는 이렇게 말합니다.

BTS’s 2017 hit “Spring Day” is a reflective, passionate tune about love, loss, and yearning for the past—although the song is unspecific about what exactly the yearning is for.

However, the cover art as well as the music video alludes, with water imagery, to a tragedy in recent South Korean history—the April 2014 sinking of the Sewol ferry.

BTS의 2017년 히트곡 "봄날(Spring Day)"은 사랑, 상실, 과거에 대한 그리움에 대한 반성적이며, 열망적인 곡이지만, 이 곡의 물의 이미지는 대한민국의 비극의 역사인 2014 년 4 월 16일 세월호 침몰 사건을 암시한다고 합니다. 이 기사에서 진은 이렇게 말합니다. "슬픈 사건에 관한 것이지만, 그리움에 관한 것이기도 합니다"

 

또한 이 기사에서 세월호 사고에 대해서도 언급합니다.

“Spring Day” came out three years after the sinking of the Sewol ferry, a disaster in which an improperly inspected, overloaded, and unbalanced ferry capsized on an overnight journey. The ship had been loaded with twice the legal limit of cargo on its decks, and the ship’s crew had lied about the boat’s total weight. 304 passengers, the majority of them high school students on the way to a sight-seeing field trip, drowned, as they had been ordered to stay in their cabins until it was too late. Only 172 passengers survived the wreck.

The disaster angered and traumatized the nation, but according to some reports, the South Korean government tried to silence entertainers who spoke out against it. The Korean Ministry of Education even banned the disaster’s commemorative yellow ribbons in schools. Later, the president at the time of the disaster, Park Geun-hye, who was widely criticized for her government’s failure to prevent it, was impeached on charges of corruption.

But the nostalgic, longing tone of BTS’s “Spring Day” subtly helped keep the memory of the disaster alive in the minds of young Koreans and the media in the years after the tragedy.

당시 이 참혹한 재난에 대해 침묵하게 만들었던 정부와 군력자들을 지적하며, 심지어 교육부에서 노란 리본을 금지시킨 점도 지적하고 있습니다. 그리고 기사에서 BTS의 "봄날(Spring Day)"가 가진 영향력에 대해 언급했습니다. 봄날의 향수를 불러일으키는 그리움은 세월호 사건 이후 계속되어 한국의 젊은이들과 언론의 마음에 은밀하게 유지되는데 도움이 되었다고 말합니다.
